Capital IQ Investor Leadership Series
produced by Argyle Executive Forum
Event Overview

Investment professionals spent 2009 confronting a wide array of unsettling developments. Fickle credit markets continue to thwart borrowers of every kind, including those seeking to leverage investments. Trusted financial institutions have collapsed, leading to unprecedented government involvement in the financial sector. Driven by shocking instances of financial fraud and insider trading, lawmakers are instituting new policies to regulate and police financial institutions more closely.

And after equity markets rallied over the last three quarters, investors still confront serious uncertainties that could send shock waves through financial markets in 2010—high unemployment, fluctuations in the value of the dollar, massive changes to the health care system, and an ongoing collapse in commercial real estate securities once worth trillions of dollars.

Even the year’s good news came with major concessions. The 2009 equity updraft translated into a great year for stocks—but over a ten year horizon, performance was anemic. At the same time, equity growth in 2009 posed serious problems for some investing approaches.

What kind of information does the institutional equity investor need to navigate 2010 successfully? What events in the financial upheaval were unique, and which represent permanent changes that will require recalibration and ongoing management?

Core topics to be explored at Capital IQ’s Chicago Investor Leadership Breakfast include but may not be limited to the following:

  • Perspectives on a decade: To what extent do returns and activity over the last decade reflect permanent changes in the investing marketplace that need to be understood and managed?
  • Execution time and high frequency trading: How fast is fast, and how will flash trading affect liquidity, valuation, and transaction costs for investors with longer horizons?
  • Interface between data and execution: How do data management systems interface with low latency trading platforms?
  • The rise of ETFs: In what ways do ETFs work as advertised, and how do they end up providing distorted versions of the assets they are intended to replicate? How much capital is flowing out of hedge and mutual funds into ETFs?
  • Transparency: What does it mean today, and how much will ongoing regulation and legislation affect it tomorrow?
  • What have fund managers learned from the credit crisis?
  • Cashflows: How do sudden inflows and outflows of cash affect strategies and returns?
  • Geographic regions and industry sectors: Where are the best opportunities now? How did sector rotation perform in the 2009 markets?
