Charles Bobrinskoy

Charles K. Bobrinskoy is the Vice Chairman and Director of Research for Ariel Investments—a Chicago-based money management firm that serves individual investors and 401(k) plans through its no-load mutual funds and manages separate accounts for institutional clients. As Vice Chairman and Director of Research, Charlie oversees the firm’s investment team and trading operations as well as all of Ariel Investments’ propriety research. He is also Co-Portfolio Manager of Ariel Focus Fund, a concentrated portfolio investing in mid-to-large cap companies. Additionally, Charlie is a member of Ariel Investments Board of Directors.

Charlie came to Ariel in 2004 from the Global Corporate and Investment Bank of Citigroup, Inc. Most recently, he served as a Managing Director and Head of North American Investment Banking Branch Offices where he managed approximately 100 professionals across six North American branches, including Chicago. Charlie’s investment banking career began in 1983 at Salomon Brothers, Inc. (a Citigroup predecessor company) where he held numerous leadership positions.

Beyond Ariel Investments, Charlie is active in the Chicago community, serving as a trustee for the Museum of Science and Industry and as a director of La Rabida Children’s Foundation, After School Matters, the Big Shoulders Fund, and the Juvenile Protective Association. He is also a member of the Duke University Trinity Board and teaches monthly investing classes at two Chicago inner-city schools. He is a member of the Commercial Club and the Economic Club of Chicago, as well as a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute.

Additionally, Charlie is a member of the board of directors of InnerWorkings, Inc., a publicly traded print procurement company. Charlie received an AB in Economics from Duke University and earned his MBA from The University of Chicago.

 

Carson Boneck, CFA

Mr. Boneck is managing director of Capital IQ’s Quantitative Research Group which specializes in uncovering new anomalies and differentiated stock selection strategies that investors can exploit to outperform the market. Previously, he was a director and senior quantitative analyst at Quantitative Services Group and a quantitative analyst at Schwab Soundview Capital Markets and its predecessor firm, where he constructed stock selection models used by more than 100 institutional investment managers. Mr. Boneck began his career in investment management as a manager of a boutique investment consultancy which performed third-party equity valuation for investment banks, investment managers, and Fortune 100 companies. He serves as chairman of the Candidate Services Advisory Group of the CFA Society of Chicago. Mr. Boneck holds a BA degree in finance, international business, and Spanish from Indiana University.

 

Katherine Buck, CFA
Director of Small Cap Equities
Wayne Hummer Asset Management Company

Ms. Buck has a 13 year career as an investment professional, starting in Fidelity Management & Research Company’s (FMRCo) Equity Research Department as a Research Associate. During her eight year tenure as a FMRCo analyst, she was responsible for primary coverage and investment recommendations for a wide variety of industries at all capitalization ranges. She went on to develop extensive experience managing portfolios sized from $5 million to almost $1 billion.

In 1999, she joined the FMRCo Small Cap Team and went on to manage the Fidelity Small Cap Value Fund from its inception in November 2004 until February 2006 to industry-leading returns. The Fund was listed as a Wall Street Journal “Category King” in 2005 and Ms. Buck was named Jim Lowell’s Fidelity Investor Fund Manager of the Year. At the time of her departure, the Fund’s assets totaled $950 million.

Prior to joining Wayne Hummer Asset Management Company in 2008, Ms. Buck ran small cap value portfolios at Magnetar Capital.

Ms. Buck earned a BSBA in Finance magna cum laude from Georgetown University.

 

Barry Colvin
Vice Chairman
Balyasny Asset Management

Mr. Colvin serves as Vice Chairman of BAM and is a member of the Executive Committee. Since joining BAM in 2006, Mr. Colvin has been focused on building the firm’s institutional capabilities globally. Prior to BAM, Barry spent seven years at fund of funds company Tremont Capital Management as President and CIO helping to build it from a $2 billion consulting firm into an $11 billion global fund of hedge funds company. Prior to Tremont he was Head of Alternatives and Director of Research at institutional advisory firm Asset Consulting Group, overseeing a total of $30 billion in assets across all asset classes, before leaving in 1999. Mr. Colvin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Missouri.

 

Jim Litinsky
Managing Member
JHL Capital Group LLC

Mr. Litinsky is the Founder and Managing Member of JHL Capital Group LLC. Prior to JHL, Mr. Litinsky was a member of the Drawbridge Special Opportunities Fund at Fortress Investment Group (NYSE:FIG). At Fortress, Mr. Litinsky was responsible for evaluating investment opportunities at all levels of the capital structure including loans, distressed debt, equities and derivatives. Prior to joining Fortress, Mr. Litinsky was a Director of Finance at Omnicom Group (NYSE:OMC), where he reported directly to the Chief Financial Officer. Prior to Omnicom, Mr. Litinsky worked in corporate finance at Allen & Company, where he specialized in M&A and public and private equity investments. Mr. Litinsky received a B.A. in Economics from Yale University, cum laude, and a J.D./M.B.A. from the Northwestern University School of Law and the Kellogg School of Management. He is a member of the Illinois Bar Association.

 

David Marshall
Senior Vice President, Financial Markets Group
Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago

David Marshall is senior vice president of the financial markets group of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Prior to this appointment in June 2006, he was a vice president and economic advisor in the economic research department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. In that position, Marshall served as the team leader for the department’s macroeconomics group. His research focuses on linkages between financial markets, financial institutions and macroeconomic performance.

Marshall’s research has been published in Econometrica, the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, European Finance Review, the Journal of Monetary Economics and the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking.

Before coming to the Federal Reserve System, Marshall was on the faculty of the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. He has also served as adjunct professor of finance at the University of Chicago, and is currently an associate editor for Macroeconomic Dynamics.

Marshall received a B.A. from Yale University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in economics from Carnegie-Mellon University.

 

Stephen C. Vogt, Ph.D.

Dr. Stephen Vogt is the chief investment officer of Mesirow Advanced Strategies, Inc. and is a member of its investment, executive and management committees. Additionally, he is a member of its parent company, Mesirow Financial Holdings Inc.’s executive committee and board of directors. He is responsible for overseeing all aspects of research including portfolio management, risk management, manager due diligence and manager monitoring. He is also active in managing the day to day operations of Mesirow Advanced Strategies, Inc. Prior to joining Mesirow Advanced Strategies, Inc., Dr. Vogt was an associate professor of finance at DePaul University. His research focused on empirical tests of financial theories and has been published in both academic and trade journals. Dr. Vogt received a B.A. in economics and mathematics from Bemidji State University, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in economics from Washington University-St. Louis.
